About TLB files

TLB files are primarily OLE Type Libraries generated by Microsoft development tools. These binary files serve as a map, describing the properties and methods of COM (Component Object Model) objects so other applications can interact with them. The main challenge users face is that TLB files are compiled binaries; they are not human-readable text files. You cannot simply open them in a text editor to see the API definitions, which creates a "black box" effect when trying to debug or reverse-engineer legacy software. To make this data useful, developers often need to convert (decompile) the TLB into IDL (Interface Definition Language) or generate a C# Interop Assembly (DLL) using tools within Microsoft Visual Studio.

A secondary but critical use case is found in accounting: TLB files are also Transaction Log Backups for Intuit QuickBooks. These files record every transaction made since the last full backup. The drawback here is proprietary lock-in; a QuickBooks TLB cannot be converted directly to XLSX or CSV by third-party tools. It acts as a safety net that must be processed alongside the main QBW company file within the QuickBooks environment to recover lost data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TLB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DLL, TBL, EXE, TLH, O and PRI files.

The TLB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TLB converter.
