About ODL files

The .ODL file format primarily functions as a OneDrive diagnostic log file or an Office Deployment Log. These files are generated automatically in the background by Microsoft OneDrive and Microsoft Office telemetry to track sync events, record errors, and monitor deployment statuses. A smaller, older subset of .ODL files are Object Description Language files, which are developer scripts used by Microsoft to define Component Object Model (COM) interfaces.

Most users only discover .ODL files when investigating sudden disk space shortages in their Windows AppData folder. To view them natively, a standard text editor like Notepad++ can open developer .odl scripts and some readable text-based logs. However, many OneDrive telemetry logs are partially encoded or locked by the operating system while the sync client is active.

The main disadvantage of these log files is that they can consume gigabytes of storage space while offering zero readability or value for the average user. They are proprietary diagnostic outputs intended strictly for Microsoft's internal telemetry. Standard online document converters fail to process them because these files lack recognizable document structures like headers or page layouts.

If you need to share an error log with IT support, converting the .ODL file to TXT or PDF is the most practical approach. Because the Object Description Language format is purely text, it converts seamlessly without data loss. However, converting a diagnostic log may result in formatting anomalies if the file contains proprietary machine code.

This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because the OS actively writes to it, and the data is often obfuscated. Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the telemetry data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying text or embedded structure, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ODL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted UPD, DIZ and DDF files.

The ODL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ODL converter.
