Convert a file to PRI
To convert other file formats to the "Resource Index" file type, you need software like Microsoft Visual Studio or a similar tool.
About PRI files
The .PRI file extension represents two distinct but technically demanding formats: the Package Resource Index used in Windows development and music notation files from Columbus Soft PriMus.
1. Microsoft Package Resource Index (Standard): These are binary files automatically generated by the Mrm Resource Compiler within Microsoft Visual Studio. They act as a lookup table for Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps, mapping resource keys (like strings or image paths) to specific assets based on user settings (language, DPI, contrast).
The Challenge: Because .PRI files are compiled binaries, they are unreadable to humans. Developers often face "black box" issues where they cannot verify which resources are actually packed inside the application without specific tooling. They generally require the proprietary Windows SDK to open.
The Solution: To inspect the contents, users often need to convert .PRI to readable XML format. This allows for text-based verification of resource paths and string values using standard editors like VS Code.
2. PriMus Music Notation: Created by Columbus Soft, these files contain sheet music, lyrics, and MIDI data.
The Challenge: This is a proprietary format that cannot be opened by standard web browsers or popular editors like Finale or MuseScore without conversion. Sharing these files with musicians who do not own the specific software is impossible.
The Solution: For sharing and printing, the best practice is converting these .PRI files to PDF. For editing in other composition software, converting to XML (MusicXML) or MID (MIDI) is essential to preserve the musical notation data.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your PRI file.
If you want to convert PRI file to PRF, JS, TS, PY, JAVA, CPP, C, CS, PHP, RB or GO, you can use Microsoft Visual Studio or similar software from the "Application Resource Indexing" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SH, PY, KT, PS1, SWIFT, LUA, PL, JAVA, SCALA, JS, VBS or TS files to PRI, try Microsoft Visual Studio or another comparable tool in the "Application Resource Indexing" category.
The PRI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PRI converter.
