The .PRI file extension primarily stands for Package Resource Index. Microsoft uses this format in Windows Universal Windows Platform (UWP) applications. It acts as a database storing compiled app resources like localized text strings, image paths, and UI layouts. Less commonly, .PRI is used as a music notation score for Columbus Soft PriMus, a mobile carrier settings file for Qualcomm, a forestry harvester production file under the StanForD standard, or a CAD print layout for Graebert ARES Commander.
For Windows developers, the MakePri.exe tool (included in the Windows SDK) creates and reads these files. The format is a proprietary binary blob. This is a major disadvantage for non-developers: you cannot simply open a .PRI file in a text editor to read the localization strings or extract images. It is locked and unreadable without specific command-line tools. Similarly, PriMus score files are proprietary, restricting musicians from easily sharing sheet music with users of standard software like Finale.
To bypass these limitations, you must convert the file. For Windows .PRI files, convert to XML to read the text data or debug localized strings. For PriMus music files (which are secretly compressed ZIP archives), convert to ZIP to extract internal XML data, or to PDF to print and share the sheet music.
