A .thumbs file typically functions as either a JSON-formatted video preview file for media servers like Jellyfin and DeoVR, or as a Microsoft Compound Document storing cached thumbnail images for Windows Explorer. Jellyfin uses .thumbs to store video scrub preview data, often linking to a sprite sheet with JSON offsets. Windows uses it to speed up directory loading by caching smaller versions of images and videos. These files are highly system-dependent and present significant disadvantages for average users. Windows thumbnail caches often bloat over time, sometimes exceeding hundreds of megabytes, and require specialized forensic tools to parse easily. Jellyfin files are completely useless outside their specific media ecosystem. Standard image viewers and web browsers cannot natively open them. Extracting the underlying images to JPG or PNG, or reading the raw JSON data, is the best conversion target.
