About THUMB files
A .THUMB file is primarily an image cache generated by the Android operating system. These files store low-resolution previews of photos and videos, allowing the gallery app to load thumbnails quickly without processing the original high-resolution files. Occasionally, .THUMB files are used as PNG format thumbnails by cloud services like Apple iCloud, or as CAD element caches by Nemetschek Allplan. They may also belong to JAlbum software. The main disadvantage of the .THUMB format is its lack of universal compatibility. Despite often containing standard JPG or PNG data under the hood, standard desktop image viewers and web browsers cannot recognize the custom extension or the proprietary database structure wrapping the images. They are purely internal system files. Furthermore, these files frequently bloat up to several gigabytes on mobile devices, consuming critical storage space. Sharing a .THUMB file directly with someone else is practically useless, as they will need specialized software to unpack it. To actually use or view the graphics stored inside, you must convert the file. For standard viewing and sharing across any device, convert to JPG. If the source cache uses transparency, convert to PNG. For web deployment, convert to WEBP.
