About TAO files

A .TAO file is a raw disc image created using the "Track-At-Once" recording mode. Unlike standard ISO files, which represent a complete filesystem, a TAO file captures the laser's stop-and-start data stream exactly as it was written to a CD or DVD - often with gaps between tracks intact. This format was popular with older burning software like CDRWin and Alkanna but is now a major drawback for modern users because Windows, macOS, and standard mounting tools cannot open or mount it natively.

Users typically encounter .TAO files when recovering data from legacy archives or ripping CDs on specialized hardware like older Akai MPC samplers. The file is effectively a "locked" container; to access the music or data inside, you must convert it. For broad compatibility, the best workflow is to convert the .TAO to a standard ISO (for data) or BIN/CUE sheet (for audio) using tools like IsoBuster or PowerISO. This ensures you can mount the image, extract individual files, or burn a new copy without relying on obsolete software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TAO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SLB, PLL and LLB files.
