The .SLB extension typically serves two distinct, industry-specific purposes, both of which suffer from significant proprietary lock-in.
Most commonly, an .SLB file is an AutoCAD Slide Library. These are legacy containers used by Autodesk AutoCAD to bundle multiple Slide (MySlide.SLD) files into a single binary. Originally designed to populate image tile menus in older CAD workflows, these files act as a "snapshot" album of vector drawings. The real problem is accessibility: .SLB files do not contain editable geometry (like DWG), only static raster-like representations. Furthermore, they are essentially black boxes to standard operating systems - you cannot double-click to view them, and they require the specific VSLIDE command within AutoCAD to render.
For archiving or documentation, users often need to convert these libraries into PDF documents to create a viewable catalog of the contained slides without requiring a $1,000+ software license. To use the images on the web or in manuals, converting extracted slides to PNG or JPG is the standard workflow.
The second common variant is a SISTEMA Library file. These are used by the IFA SISTEMA software for calculating the Performance Level (PL) of machine safety components. These files contain database records of safety parameters. They are strictly internal to the SISTEMA environment and often need to be converted to PDF reports or exported to XML for data interoperability.
