About SXM files

The .SXM file format is primarily used to store raw, high-resolution topographical data generated by Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) devices, including Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM) and Scanning Tunneling Microscopes (STM). A secondary, obsolete use for the .SXM extension is the StarMath Formula format, a legacy XML-based equation file developed by Oracle for StarOffice.

SPM data files are native to the Nanonis SPM control software by SPECS Group and similar systems by Nanosurf AG. StarMath files are managed by Apache OpenOffice.

Both variants of the .SXM format present severe accessibility limitations. The SPM variant is strictly proprietary and locks your multidimensional scan data inside specialized, expensive scientific software. Standard operating systems and image viewers cannot interpret these files, making collaboration outside of physics or material science labs incredibly difficult. Meanwhile, the StarMath variant is a legacy format that frequently breaks or fails to render when imported into modern word processors like Microsoft Word.

To break free from these restrictions, conversion is necessary. For publishing SPM topographies online or in research papers, convert to PNG or JPG (be aware that this flattens the 3D Z-height data into a 2D color map, losing the raw matrix values). For quantitative data analysis in Python or MATLAB, extract the arrays to CSV or TXT. If you are dealing with legacy StarMath equations, convert them to PDF for secure archiving or ODF for editing. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The SXM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SXM converter.
