About SXG files

The .SXG file format acts as a master document created by legacy StarOffice or early versions of Apache OpenOffice. It serves as a container file that links multiple smaller subdocuments (usually SXW files) together. This allows users to manage massive documents, like books or manuals, by editing chapters individually while maintaining a unified index and table of contents.

These files were primarily managed by software from Sun Microsystems and later Apache OpenOffice. However, .SXG is an obsolete, legacy format that pre-dates the modern OpenDocument standard. The biggest disadvantage of the .SXG format is its reliance on external file paths. If you share an .SXG file without the linked subdocuments, the recipient will open a broken, empty document. Furthermore, very few modern applications still support native importing of StarOffice XML formats.
