About XCU files
A .XCU file is an XML Configuration Update file utilized by open-source productivity suites like LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice. These files function as delta records, storing only the changes made to the default application settings, such as UI customization, macro security levels, or extension preferences. They are typically found deeply nested within user profile directories or packaged inside OXT extension archives.
The biggest obstacle with .XCU files is their opacity; despite being standard XML, they lack default system associations, meaning a double-click often leads to an "Open With" error or attempts to launch the main office suite, which cannot render them as document files. Furthermore, because they only contain configuration fragments (updates), they may appear incomplete without the corresponding schema context. Users often need to access these files to manually patch corrupted settings or audit extension behaviors.
For inspection and editing, the most practical workflow is treating the file as text. Converting or renaming .XCU to XML allows for syntax highlighting in browsers and code editors like VS Code. For documentation or sharing configuration snippets without risking accidental execution, converting to PDF or TXT provides a safe, static view of the internal registry logic.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XCU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XCU file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use LibreOffice or similar software from the "Configuration Settings Update" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to XCU, try LibreOffice or another comparable tool in the "Configuration Settings Update" category.
The XCU Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XCU converter.
