About SVD files

The .SVD extension is a classic example of a filename collision, representing three distinct file types that require completely different handling.

  1. ARM CMSIS System View Description (XML): This is the standard format for defining the programmer's view of a microcontroller's peripherals. While it is technically human-readable XML, these files are often massive and difficult to parse manually. Developers frequently need to convert these .SVD files to JSON, C Header files, or HTML documentation to integrate them into IDEs like Keil µVision or to generate register maps.
  2. Roland Synthesizer Data: Used by instruments like the Roland XPS-10 or GR-55, these are proprietary binary files containing patch settings, songs, or system backups. The main constraint here is hardware lock-in; you generally cannot "open" these on a PC without specific librarian software from Roland, making conversion to standard audio formats like MP3 or WAV impossible directly - they contain instructions, not sound.
  3. Polytec Scanning Vibrometer Data: These are scientific data files from Polytec vibrometers. Researchers often struggle with the proprietary nature of this format when trying to perform analysis in third-party tools. The solution is converting these .SVD datasets into CSV, MAT (Matlab), or XLSX (Excel) to liberate the measurement data for broader scientific analysis.

The SVD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SVD converter.
