The .SVL extension is a classic "container of confusion" because it is used by completely unrelated industries for highly specific tasks. Most commonly (approx. 25%), it represents Svantek Logger files generated by SvanPC++ software for analyzing sound and vibration measurements. These are binary data logs used in environmental monitoring or occupational health; the main problem here is that they are locked into the Svantek ecosystem. Users typically need to convert these to XLSX (Excel) or CSV to actually perform custom statistical analysis or graphing outside of the proprietary viewer.
Another significant use (approx. 13%) is the Trimble SiteVision Load file. These are georeferenced 3D models used in augmented reality (AR) construction tools. Contractors often receive an SVL but need a standard CAD format like DXF or DWG to view the site plans in desktop software like AutoCAD without needing the field tablet.
Less frequently, you might encounter an SVL file from Sonic Visualiser. WARNING: This file does not contain audio. It is merely an XML session file that points to audio files on your hard drive and stores your analysis layers. If you are trying to share a song, sending the SVL file alone will result in a "File Not Found" error for the recipient. For these, you don't convert the SVL itself; you must use the software to export the audio or image layers to WAV or PNG.
