About ST files

The .ST file extension is a multi-purpose container, most notably serving as a raw disk image for the Atari ST line of personal computers from the 1980s. These binary files are exact sector-by-sector copies of legacy 3.5-inch floppy disks (typically 720KB), preserving vintage games and software for modern emulation. Additionally, .ST files are widely used in development environments as source code for Smalltalk (the pioneer of object-oriented programming), StringTemplate web templates, or PLC Structured Text (IEC 61131-3) for industrial automation.

The primary issue with .ST files is their ambiguity and lack of native support on modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS. An Atari disk image appears as a corrupted binary file if opened in a text editor, requiring specialized emulators like Hatari or Steem to function. Conversely, Smalltalk or PLC files are plain text but often lack the correct file association to open in editors like VS Code.

For retro gaming and archiving, the best practice is converting .ST disk images to the MSA (Magic Shadow Archiver) format or a standard raw IMG for broader compatibility with hardware emulators like Gotek. For developers and engineers, converting .ST source code to TXT, HTML, or PDF ensures the code logic is viewable, printable, and shareable without requiring the original proprietary IDEs.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ST file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZIP, LUA, STL, MSA, RAR, STP, MANIFEST, SRT, PNG, PDF, MP4, KFX and IPT files.

The ST Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ST converter.
