The .SPM extension is a polysemic container used across vastly different industries, creating significant confusion for users trying to open them.
Most commonly (approx. 27%), an SPM file is a Scanning Probe Microscopy data file generated by Bruker (formerly Veeco/Digital Instruments) NanoScope software. These files contain high-resolution topographical data from atomic force microscopes. The primary challenge is that they are proprietary binary files; you cannot simply open them in Excel or standard image viewers. Researchers often struggle to share this data with colleagues who lack the expensive analysis software.
