About SPM files
The .SPM extension is a polysemic container used across vastly different industries, creating significant confusion for users trying to open them.
Most commonly (approx. 27%), an SPM file is a Scanning Probe Microscopy data file generated by Bruker (formerly Veeco/Digital Instruments) NanoScope software. These files contain high-resolution topographical data from atomic force microscopes. The primary challenge is that they are proprietary binary files; you cannot simply open them in Excel or standard image viewers. Researchers often struggle to share this data with colleagues who lack the expensive analysis software. For publication or external analysis, the best workflow is converting these files to CSV or TXT (for numerical analysis) or raster images like TIFF or PNG (for visual presentation).
Secondly (approx. 13%), .SPM files are Model Setup files for Spektrum RC transmitters. These files store radio configuration settings (trim, servo travel, mixing) for remote-controlled aircraft and cars. While they are essentially XML-based or structured text, they are not designed for human readability. Users often need to convert or view these as plain TXT or PDF files to audit settings without loading them back onto the transmitter hardware.
Other notable uses include Google SentencePiece models (machine learning tokens) and SpeedTree 3D vegetation models. Because the format varies so wildly, identifying the source is critical before attempting conversion.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SPM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SPM file to RPM, MPH, ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB or ACE, you can use Bruker NanoScope Analysis or similar software from the "Scanning Probe Microscopy Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to SPM, try Bruker NanoScope Analysis or another comparable tool in the "Scanning Probe Microscopy Data" category.
The SPM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SPM converter.
