About SPM files
The .SPM file extension suffers from extreme fragmentation, making it one of the most frustrating formats to handle. Primarily, it acts as a Scanning Probe Microscopy data file used by Bruker NanoScope or SPMLab to store atomic force microscopy (AFM) or scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) data. Alternatively, it is heavily used by Spektrum RC transmitters to store radio configurations for remote-control planes and drones. Other niche uses include SuperTuxKart 3D models, SpeedTree vegetation models, and Google SentencePiece tokenizer models. This fragmentation is a major disadvantage. A Bruker SPM file is a proprietary scientific dataset that is completely useless without specialized, expensive analysis software. Meanwhile, Spektrum RC SPM files are often text-based but tied strictly to specific radio firmware versions, meaning a file from an older radio might fail to load on a newer one. Users constantly need to convert these files to escape proprietary lock-in. For microscopy data, convert to CSV or TXT to extract the raw 2D arrays for plotting in Python or Excel. For archiving scans, convert to TIFF. For Spektrum models, you may need to convert to .ISPM for newer radios.
