About SNT files

A .SNT file is a data file created by legacy versions of Microsoft Windows (specifically Windows 7, 8, and early Windows 10) to store desktop notes from the Sticky Notes application. These files are typically named StickyNotes.snt and are stored in the user's hidden AppData directory. The format is highly proprietary and obsolete. It utilizes the Microsoft Compound File (OLE-CF) binary structure. This is a severe disadvantage for modern users because standard text editors cannot read the file. If you open a .SNT file in Notepad, you will only see unreadable characters and gibberish. This occurs because the actual note text is encoded as RTF (Rich Text Format) streams hidden within a complex binary container. Users usually encounter .SNT files during data recovery, such as pulling data from an old hard drive or after upgrading to Windows 11. Modern Windows versions abandoned this format entirely in favor of an SQLite database (plum.sqlite), making old .SNT files orphaned and inaccessible natively. To read your old notes, you must extract the text. The best target formats are TXT, RTF, or DOCX. Converting to these formats will discard the visual layout parameters (like note color and screen coordinates) but will successfully recover the raw text data. Because this is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters often fail to process it. While traditional conversion is difficult, our engine can inspect the file's internal OLE structure and extract embedded text content. If our analysis detects the underlying RTF text streams, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SNT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted NST, PDF, TXT, TMP, RPT, ZIP, JPG, EXE and SQLITE files.

The SNT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SNT converter.
