About SMZ files

The .SMZ file format serves multiple purposes depending on the software that created it. Most commonly, it is a compressed map data file used by SimpleMappr and StatPlanet, or a SmartMusic performance file used by MakeMusic. It is also occasionally used as a compressed document format by SMath Studio. In all these cases, the .SMZ file acts as a container - typically a standard ZIP or GZIP archive - holding proprietary application data such as XML files, audio assets, or MapInfo TAB data. The main disadvantage of the .SMZ format is its reliance on specific software environments. If you send an .SMZ file to a colleague who does not have SmartMusic or SimpleMappr installed, their operating system will not know how to open it. This causes severe collaboration bottlenecks. Because these are highly specialized project files, direct conversion to a generic format like PDF or MP3 is rarely perfect. Standard online converters completely fail to process .SMZ files because they do not recognize the proprietary extension. However, you can still extract the raw data. We recommend converting or extracting .SMZ to ZIP or GZ to access the underlying XML or map files. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. Since our analysis detects standard compression inside the .SMZ container, extracting the embedded assets is often highly successful.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SMZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SM, TXT, TRANSCRIPT and MPB files.

The SMZ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SMZ converter.
