The .SGA file functions primarily as a proprietary game asset archive developed by Relic Entertainment for their Essence Engine games, such as Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, and Age of Empires IV. It is also used as an animation data file by Supergiant Games for titles like Hades. In Relic games, these archives bundle large amounts of game data, including 3D models, maps, LUA scripts, and audio into a single container. In Hades, the file stores skeletal tracking and animation behaviors, often utilizing internal JSON formatting.
Users typically need to unpack or convert .SGA files to modify game mechanics, extract high-resolution textures, or rip audio tracks. The format has significant disadvantages for casual users. It is highly proprietary and version-dependent. An archive from an older game is often structurally incompatible with a newer game. Because it uses a proprietary compression and indexing system, standard archiving software like 7-Zip or WinRAR cannot open them.
