About SEW files

The .SEW format is a legacy home embroidery design file developed for older Janome Memory Craft sewing machines. It contains the exact X and Y coordinate machine movements, thread color stops, and stitch counts required to embroider a specific digitized pattern onto fabric.

The primary disadvantage of the .SEW format is its age and strict hardware limitations. It only supports a limited hoop size and a basic, restrictive color palette. Modern web browsers and standard image viewers cannot open or interpret these stitch files natively. If you do not have dedicated embroidery software like Embird Studio or Janome's proprietary digitizing tools, the file is entirely unreadable on a standard computer. It is a closed, proprietary format designed specifically for 1990s-era machine hardware, making cross-compatibility a major headache for modern crafters.

To use these designs on newer machines or different brands (like Brother or Husqvarna), you must convert them. The best target formats are JEF (the modern Janome equivalent) or widely supported formats like PES (Brother) and DST (Tajima). Be aware that converting between machine formats can sometimes result in minor shifts in stitch density or color mapping errors, as each brand interprets color codes differently.

Because this file format is difficult to open or convert due to its proprietary nature, standard online converters often fail to process it. Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Our tool will inspect the file, and if we detect a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SEW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ISM, JEF, ZIP, PNG, JPG, EMB, PTM, TSL and SCORE files.

The SEW Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SEW converter.
