About HDR files

High Dynamic Range (HDR) files are a type of image format that allows for greater range of color, brightness, and contrast than traditional image formats. HDR files are often used in photography, film, and video production, as well as in computer graphics. HDR files are typically stored in the Radiance (.hdr) and OpenEXR (.exr) formats.

HDR files can be converted to a variety of other image formats using software such as ImageMagick, GIMP, and Adobe Photoshop. Conversion of HDR files to other formats can be challenging due to the larger color range and higher bit depth of the HDR file. It is important to consider the target format when converting HDR files, as some formats may not be able to accurately represent the full range of color and brightness in the HDR file. Additionally, some formats may not be able to accurately represent the full range of contrast in the HDR file.

HDR files can be difficult to work with, and they require specialized software and hardware to view and edit them. Furthermore, the high bit depth of HDR files can make them large and difficult to store and share. For these reasons, it is often best to convert HDR files to a more manageable format before sharing them. The free and easy online website Convert.Guru can be used to quickly and easily convert HDR files to other formats.

The HDR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began more than 25 years ago in California, when Tom Simondi published the most comprehensive database of file formats on his website. Before that, Tom had worked on Space Shuttle development at the Air Force Systems Command’s Space Division in Los Angeles. He is known as one of the top programmers of the late 1980s.

When Microsoft integrated Tom’s Filext database into Windows XP, it became the leading platform for analyzing and processing file types and formats.

Today, we use the latest technologies to analyze, process, and convert one of the world's largest collections of file formats. We are committed to developing the best HDR converter by continuously improving quality, usability, and reliability.
