About HDR files

The .hdr extension most commonly identifies a Radiance RGBE image file, a specialized 32-bit raster format used in 3D rendering, lighting simulation, and photography to capture high dynamic range (HDR) data. Unlike standard images, .hdr files store luminance values far exceeding the visible spectrum, making them essential for creating realistic lighting in software like Blender and Autodesk 3ds Max. However, this format presents significant challenges: files are large, cannot be displayed correctly in standard web browsers or OS viewers (often appearing washed out or black), and require tone mapping to be usable for print or web. Additionally, a .hdr file might alternatively be a text-based metadata header for ENVI geospatial data or Analyze 7.5 medical images. These header files are useless without their accompanying binary data files (e.g., img, bil) and cannot be converted in isolation. For Radiance images, convert to OpenEXR or 16-bit TIFF to preserve data for professional editing, or to JPG and PNG for web previews. convert.guru automatically distinguishes between image and header formats to guide you to the correct workflow.

The HDR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HDR converter.
