About SBE files

The .SBE file extension has two distinct real-world applications. Most commonly, it functions as a SafeBoot Encrypted file managed by McAfee SafeBoot (now integrated into McAfee Endpoint Security). These files store highly sensitive data locked behind enterprise-grade encryption. Alternatively, .SBE files act as game capture buffer files generated by the Medal.tv clipping software. In this scenario, the file holds raw, temporary video data captured in the background during gameplay.

The main disadvantage of the .SBE format is its strictly proprietary and locked-down nature. SafeBoot files are entirely inaccessible without the correct authorization keys and the resident McAfee agent. Similarly, Medal.tv buffer files are incomplete video fragments; they lack the standard headers required for playback in traditional media players. Users cannot simply open an .SBE buffer in software like VLC media player or edit it in Adobe Premiere.

Because of these rigid limitations, standard online video or document converters will fail to process .SBE files. Converters cannot bypass McAfee's encryption, nor can they magically assemble header-less Medal.tv fragments into a standard MP4 video. To get a usable file, Medal.tv users must assemble and export the clip directly within the Medal.tv app, while SafeBoot users must decrypt the file using their enterprise credentials.

Despite these barriers, convert.guru remains a highly practical workaround for file identification. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our tool will analyze the hexadecimal signature to confirm whether you are dealing with encryption or raw video fragments. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SBE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SEB, SB3, DOCX, LFS, AFPK and KWI files.

The SBE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SBE converter.
