Convert a file to SDZ
To convert other file formats to the "Game Archive / Synth Patch" file type, you need software like Spring Engine or a similar tool.
About SDZ files
The .SDZ file extension primarily acts as a Spring Content Package, which is a compressed archive used by the open-source Spring Engine to store mods, maps, and 3D assets for real-time strategy games. Alternatively, it functions as a FANTOM Sound Pack used by Roland hardware synthesizers to store proprietary patches, sequences, and multisamples. It is also occasionally used as a compressed database format by the National Cancer Institute.
These proprietary and highly specialized formats carry strict accessibility limits. Spring .SDZ files are essentially renamed ZIP archives, meaning keeping them as .SDZ limits your ability to browse their contents natively in standard operating systems. Roland's sound packs are entirely closed-source, locked to specific synthesizer hardware, and cannot be natively played on a PC or Mac without dedicated librarian software. You cannot open a Roland .SDZ in standard digital audio workstations (DAWs) or standard web browsers.
To modify or extract contents, a Spring .SDZ should be converted or renamed to a standard ZIP archive, allowing extraction of embedded PNG, LUA, and XML files. For Roland files, direct software conversion to standard audio formats like WAV or MP3 is currently impossible without recording the hardware output directly.
Because these are highly specialized or hardware-locked formats, standard online converters fail to process them. Often, only the original hardware or game engine can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as standard ZIP compression within a Spring package - viewing or extraction may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SDZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SDZ file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use Spring Engine or similar software from the "Compressed Game and Synth Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to SDZ, try Spring Engine or another comparable tool in the "Compressed Game and Synth Data" category.
The SDZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SDZ converter.
