About SD2 files

The .sd2 extension primarily refers to the legacy SAS Version 6 Dataset, a proprietary binary database format used by SAS Institute software before the modern SAS7BDAT standard. These files are notorious for compatibility headaches: they are strictly 32-bit and often cannot be opened directly by modern 64-bit SAS installations without specific compatibility engines or bridging tools. Users typically need to convert these obsolete datasets to CSV or Excel to make the statistical data accessible to current analytics platforms like Python, R, or Tableau.

A secondary but significant use of .sd2 is the Sound Designer II audio format, developed by Avid (formerly Digidesign). Once the industry standard for Pro Tools on Mac, these files rely on macOS 'resource forks' to store critical metadata (sample rate, bit depth). If an SD2 audio file is moved to a Windows PC, USB drive, or cloud storage, this resource fork is often stripped, leaving a 'corrupt' raw file that plays as static. Converting these archives to WAV or Broadcast WAVE (BWF) is essential for preservation.

The SD2 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SD2 converter.
