About SD2F files
The .sd2f file (often also seen as sd2) is an obsolete, uncompressed audio format originally developed by Digidesign (now Avid Technology) for the Sound Designer II software and early versions of Pro Tools. It stores high-quality Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) audio data.
The primary disadvantage of the .sd2f format is its reliance on the legacy classic Mac OS file system. It stores the actual raw audio in the 'data fork' and critical playback metadata - such as sample rate, bit depth, and channel count - in the 'resource fork'. If you move a .sd2f file to a Windows PC, an external FAT32/exFAT drive, or upload it to standard cloud storage, the resource fork is instantly deleted. This leaves behind a headerless raw audio file that plays back as deafening white noise or static in standard media players.
To safely store or share this audio, you must convert .sd2f files to modern, single-file header formats like WAV, AIFF, or FLAC. These targets preserve the uncompressed audio quality without the fragility of resource forks.
Because this is a closed, proprietary, and heavily outdated format with split-file architecture, standard online converters usually fail to process it. If our analysis detects the underlying raw PCM stream, we can often rescue the audio even if the metadata fork is missing.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SD2F file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted DISC, SD2, MIDNAM, MV3 and FWV files.

The SD2F Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SD2F converter.
