The .SCH extension represents an electronic circuit schematic file, primarily used in Electronic Design Automation (EDA) to map out electrical connections before designing a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). Because schematic capture is a fundamental step in hardware design, dozens of programs use this exact same extension, including Autodesk EAGLE, KiCad, Altium Designer, and OrCAD.
The critical disadvantage of .SCH files is their complete lack of interoperability. Even though they share the exact same extension, an .SCH file created in EAGLE (which uses an XML-based structure) is fundamentally different from a proprietary binary .SCH file exported by older Protel or ExpressPCB systems. This extreme fragmentation means you cannot simply open the file unless you have the exact authoring software installed. Furthermore, many of these professional EDA tools require expensive commercial licenses, making it difficult to share designs with clients or mechanical engineers.
To share your circuit designs universally, you must convert the file. For client review and printing, convert to PDF to lock in the visual schematic. For web documentation, convert to scalable SVG. For integration into mechanical design workflows, convert to DXF.
