About SCI files

The .SCI file extension is heavily fragmented and used by several distinct software ecosystems. Most commonly, it acts as a proprietary sign-making design file created by Scanvec Amiable Inspire or AccuSoft Inspire Pro, storing vector graphics, text, and layout paths for CNC routing or vinyl cutting. Alternatively, .SCI serves as a plain text scripting file for Scilab, an open-source numerical computational package similar to MATLAB. Other notable uses include secure, ZIP-compressed data analysis documents for Dedoose and PCB layer stackup files for CST Studio Suite.

The primary disadvantage of the .SCI format is its lack of universal compatibility. If your file is a sign-making graphic, it is locked into legacy, highly specialized proprietary software. Opening it requires expensive licenses, and the files cannot be viewed in standard web browsers or generic image editors. Scilab scripts, while plain text, require the specific Scilab environment to execute the code. Dedoose project files are heavily encrypted and useless outside of an active subscription.

Converting .SCI files is essential to break out of vendor lock-ins. For web publishing, convert vector design files to SVG or WebP. For print production and CNC routing, export to EPS or DXF, though some proprietary layout metadata may be lost during the translation. For editing or archiving Scilab scripts, convert to generic TXT or M (MATLAB) to ensure long-term readability. If you are dealing with a legacy video .SCI file, convert it to MP4. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The SCI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SCI converter.
