About SBK files
The .SBK file extension is a "chameleon" format used by over a dozen different applications, primarily serving three distinct functions: application backups, audio sound banks, and creative projects.
Most frequently, an .SBK file is an automatic backup generated by software like SAP2000 (structural analysis), SWiSH Max (Flash animation), or Microsoft SQL Server. In these cases, the file is often an exact copy of the original project file with a renamed extension to prevent accidental overwrites. Users often struggle to open these because their operating system does not associate the generic .sbk extension with the parent software.
Alternatively, in audio production, the .SBK format represents an E-MU SoundFont 1.0 Bank. These legacy files contain instrument samples used by older sound cards (like the Creative Sound Blaster) and are generally incompatible with modern Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) without conversion.
Finally, it may be a project file from Scrapbook Factory by Nova Development, containing layouts, photos, and text.
Conversion Strategies:
- For Backups: If you know the originating software (e.g., SAP2000), the most effective "conversion" is often simply renaming the file extension from .SBK to the original format (e.g., SDB or SWI) to restore it.
- For Audio: To use legacy SoundFonts in modern samplers, convert the .SBK bank to the newer SF2 format or extract samples to WAV using tools like Awave Studio.
- For Scrapbooks: These proprietary files must be opened in Scrapbook Factory. To share them, use the software's export function to save the layout as a PDF or JPG image.

The SBK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SBK converter.
