About JPA files
A .JPA file is predominantly a website backup archive created by the Akeeba Backup extension for CMS platforms like Joomla and WordPress. It bundles the complete website file structure, database dumps, and installation scripts into a single container. In a minority of cases, the .JPA extension is also used for ActivPrimary flipchart images or AI-generated images from ComfyUI Stable Diffusion workflows.
To manage or extract Akeeba backups, users must use the official Akeeba eXtract Wizard on their desktop or the Akeeba Kickstart PHP script on a web server. The primary disadvantage of the .JPA format is its proprietary architecture. It was custom-built to bypass PHP memory and timeout limits on shared hosting. Consequently, standard archive managers like 7-Zip or WinRAR cannot read or extract these files, which frequently traps users who just want to quickly inspect a single file inside their backup.
When converting .JPA backups, the best approach is to extract the raw files and repackage them into a standard ZIP or TAR format for universal compatibility. If the file is an ActivPrimary graphic or ComfyUI output, converting to JPG or PNG makes the image viewable in any web browser.
Because of its highly specialized, proprietary multi-part structure, a .JPA backup is notoriously difficult to open or convert with third-party tools. Often, only the original Akeeba software can properly interpret the chunked data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as a JFIF image, a PNG wrapper, or a standard archive - viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your JPA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert JPA file to SQL, BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ, 7Z or RAR, you can use Akeeba Backup or similar software from the "Website Backup Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The JPA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JPA converter.
