The .SAL file extension primarily represents a Logic Analyzer Session Data file created by Saleae Logic software or a Signal Acquisition Log used by Sigrok PulseView. Under the hood, this file is a compressed ZIP container storing captured digital and analog signal data, timing information, and protocol analyzer results. In a smaller percentage of cases, a .SAL file functions as a proprietary audio playlist for older software like Samsung Kies or Softpointer Tag&Rename.
The main drawback of a .SAL logic file is its proprietary structure and massive file size, which often exceeds several gigabytes for high-speed captures. You cannot natively open it in a text editor or spreadsheet without installing heavy desktop client software. Playlist variants are equally frustrating, tying you to obsolete, unsupported mobile management software.
For engineering and data analysis, you should convert .SAL captures to CSV for manipulation in Microsoft Excel or VCD (Value Change Dump) for use in third-party waveform viewers like GTKWave. Note that exporting to raw text or CSV will dramatically inflate the file size compared to the compressed binary.
