A .PLS file is a plain text playlist format used primarily to store URLs for multimedia audio streams. Originally developed for SHOUTcast and Winamp, it structures data exactly like a legacy Windows INI file.
Other software also uses the .PLS extension, including Allplan for Plot Layouts, Oracle for PL/SQL Stored Procedures, and Samsung for TV channel lists.
The biggest disadvantage of the .PLS format is that it does not contain actual audio data. It only holds text links. If the remote server goes offline or a local file is moved, the playlist breaks. Users also frequently struggle to share these files, incorrectly assuming they are sending an MP3 song. Furthermore, many modern smart devices and web applications lack native support for .PLS files.
