About RWZ files
The .RWZ file extension primarily represents the Rules Wizard File generated by Microsoft Outlook. This binary file stores user-defined automation logic for managing email, such as filtering messages into folders, flagging priority items, or forwarding emails based on specific criteria.
A significant limitation for users is that RWZ files are proprietary and encoded in binary. Unlike XML or JSON settings files, you cannot open an RWZ file in a text editor like Notepad to read or edit your rules. This makes it difficult to verify the contents of a backup without overwriting your current active rules by importing them. Furthermore, version compatibility issues often arise when moving RWZ files between different iterations of Outlook (e.g., from 2016 to 365).
For archiving or documentation, the best conversion goal is PDF or TXT. While direct conversion tools are rare, users can print their rules list from within the Outlook interface to a virtual printer to create a readable PDF.
In rare cases (less than 1%), an RWZ file may be a Rawzor Compressed Image. This is a legacy lossless compression format for camera raw photos. These files are not supported by standard web browsers or modern editors and must be converted to JPG, PNG, or WebP for viewing and editing.

The RWZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RWZ converter.
