About RVG files

The .rvg file extension is exclusively associated with RadioVisioGraphy, a digital dental X-ray technology originally developed by Kodak and now managed by Carestream Dental. These files essentially function as specialized containers for dental imaging data, structured closely to the medical DICOM standard but often optimized for proprietary acquisition software like CS Imaging.

While .rvg files provide high-dynamic-range diagnostic data for dentists, they pose significant accessibility challenges outside the clinic. Because the format is proprietary to specific dental practice management systems, patients and insurance providers cannot open these files without specialized, expensive software. Sending a raw .rvg file to a patient or a specialist often results in an unreadable attachment. Furthermore, the files are typically large and uncompressed to maintain diagnostic fidelity, making them difficult to email.

To overcome these interoperability barriers, the most effective solution is conversion. For patient communication or general viewing, converting .rvg to standard JPEG or PNG formats renders the X-ray viewable on any device. For archiving or professional data exchange, converting to standard DICOM (.DCM) ensures compatibility with third-party PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems). For insurance claims and reports, converting to PDF documents is the industry standard.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RVG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PANO, WEBP, STV, SC, JPG, SVG, PDF, ZIP, PNG, DCM, JPEG, DAT and DWG files.

The RVG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RVG converter.
