About RVG files
The .RVG file format is used to store digital dental X-ray images captured by intraoral sensors. Under the hood, these files primarily rely on the DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) standard to securely bundle high-resolution image data with critical patient metadata. They are primarily generated and managed by dental imaging software such as Carestream Dental (formerly Kodak Dental Imaging).
Users typically need to convert .RVG files because they are completely inaccessible to the average user. Standard operating systems, web browsers, and default image viewers like Windows Photos or Apple Preview cannot interpret the proprietary medical headers within the file. If a patient requests a copy of their X-rays, or a dentist needs to share images with an insurance company, the file must be converted.
The best target formats for conversion are standard image formats like JPG or PNG for general viewing, or PDF for document sharing. However, converting an .RVG file to a consumer format strips away the medical metadata (such as exposure levels and patient ID) and reduces the image bit-depth (usually from diagnostic 16-bit grayscale down to 8-bit). This means converted files should never be used for actual clinical diagnosis.
Because of its highly specialized medical nature, standard online image converters almost always fail to process .RVG files properly. They cannot read the clinical headers.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RVG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert RVG file to JPG, JPEG, PDF, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, TIF, WEBP, ICO, CUR or PSD, you can use Carestream Dental or similar software from the "Dental X-ray Image Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The RVG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RVG converter.
