About PANO files
The .pano file extension is primarily used for Panoramic dental X-ray images stored in the DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) format. These files are commonly generated by Carestream Dental equipment and hold detailed, high-resolution scans of a patient's mouth. A secondary use for .pano files is 360-degree panoramic photography created by the Windows Camera app or the legacy Microsoft Photosynth software, which stores image tiles inside a ZIP archive structure. Rarely, the extension is used for XML-based panorama project files in the discontinued Kolor Autopano software. The major disadvantage of the .pano format is its proprietary or specialized nature. Opening medical variants requires expensive, specialized DICOM viewers, while Microsoft's panoramic formats are deprecated and no longer supported by modern web browsers or default OS image galleries. Users typically need to convert .pano files to standard image formats like JPG or PNG to share dental records easily or view photos on modern mobile devices. However, converting a clinical DICOM .pano to JPG strips vital medical metadata (like patient ID and exposure settings) and compresses the dynamic range, meaning the output should never be used for primary diagnostic purposes. Because medical .pano files are strictly formatted DICOM containers and Microsoft variants are complex ZIP structures, standard online converters often fail to process them. If our analysis detects the supported underlying DICOM data or embedded ZIP image archives, viewing or extraction is still possible.

The PANO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PANO converter.
