A .RU file extension is most commonly encountered as a saved webpage archive formatted as MHTML, generated by the Chromium Blink rendering engine used in Google Chrome. However, it is also frequently found as a renamed JPEG image downloaded from the Odnoklassniki (OK.RU) social network, or as a ZIP-based browser extension for Yandex Browser. Less commonly, it acts as a firmware update for Digital Monitoring Products (DMP) security panels.
The primary disadvantage of a .RU file is its extreme ambiguity. Operating systems like Windows or macOS do not know how to open a .RU file by default because it is not a standardized format. A file could be a webpage snapshot, an image, or an executable update. If it is an MHTML archive, it requires a compatible web browser to view. If it is a renamed image from a social network, standard photo viewers will reject it until the extension is corrected.
You need to determine the underlying format before using the file. If the file is a disguised JPG, you should rename the extension or convert it to standard PNG or WEBP for universal compatibility. If it is an MHTML web archive, converting it to a PDF document is the best way to ensure the layout remains readable and static on mobile devices.
