About RT files
The .rt file extension represents a fragmented landscape of file formats, most commonly associated with RealText, a legacy streaming text format developed by RealNetworks. Designed for the RealPlayer ecosystem, these XML-based files display synchronized subtitles or captions alongside RealMedia streams. Because RealText is now largely obsolete, modern media players and web browsers cannot natively render the content, locking valuable transcript data inside a proprietary format.
In many corporate and administrative environments, an .rt file is simply a misnamed or truncated Rich Text Format (RTF) document. Users or older automated systems often shorten the standard RTF extension to .rt, causing operating systems to fail when attempting to open the file with Microsoft Word or WordPad. Additionally, the Unity game engine utilizes this extension for Render Target textures - binary assets used in real-time graphics pipelines that are not intended for external viewing.
Conversion Recommendations:
- For Text/Subtitles: If the file contains readable text with XML tags, convert it to SRT (SubRip) for video compatibility or TXT to strip the formatting for plain reading.
- For Documents: If the file is a misnamed document, converting to PDF ensures universal layout preservation, while DOCX is ideal for editing in modern word processors.
- For Developers: Binary files are likely Unity assets; these should be imported directly into the engine rather than converted.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted RT_, RTF, MFG, PAG, AMM, CBM, RA and MW files.
The RT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RT converter.
