About RA files
The .RA file extension is historically associated with RealAudio, a proprietary streaming audio format developed by RealNetworks. Designed in the mid-1990s for low-bandwidth dial-up connections, these files utilize aggressive compression algorithms that often result in lower fidelity or "metallic" sound quality. Today, .RA files present significant friction for users: they are proprietary, obsolete, and largely unsupported by modern web browsers, smartphones, and standard media players like Windows Media Player. To make these recordings accessible on devices like iPhones or Androids, users should convert them to MP3 (for compatibility) or AAC. For archiving historical audio without further compression artifacts, converting to WAV or FLAC is recommended.
Additionally, a notable subset of .RA files are actually Roshal Archive (RAR) compressed data, often resulting from split volumes or user renaming. These cannot be played as audio and must be opened or converted to ZIP using software like WinRAR.

The RA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RA converter.
