About OPML files

.OPML stands for Outline Processor Markup Language. It is an XML-based format used primarily for structured outlines and exchanging lists of RSS feeds, podcast subscriptions, and blog rolls. Software like NetNewsWire, Dynalist, and tools from The Omni Group rely on .OPML to import and export hierarchical user data. Even YouTube subscriptions can be handled via this markup format.

While widely supported by feed readers and outliners, .OPML is highly disadvantaged when it comes to human readability and data portability outside of specialized tools. It is plain text formatted with strict, nested XML tags, making it visually overwhelming to read or edit manually in a standard text editor. Furthermore, standard spreadsheet tools like Microsoft Excel cannot natively parse nested .OPML structures into neat rows and columns without complex data mapping.
