Convert a file to RK
To convert other file formats to the "REAPER License Key" file type, you need software like Cockos REAPER or a similar tool.
About RK files
The .RK file extension is most commonly associated with Cockos REAPER, a highly customizable digital audio workstation (DAW). In this primary context, it functions as a proprietary software license file that verifies user purchase and unlocks the application's full capabilities. Alternatively, .RK files represent legacy, highly compressed archives created by the discontinued WinRK software, or compressed game graphics utilized by the Red King game engine.
To apply the license file, users must import it directly into Cockos REAPER. For .RK archive files, legacy software from RK Software is required to extract the contents. A major disadvantage of the .RK format is its rigid, proprietary nature. License files contain cryptographically signed, obfuscated binary data; opening them in standard text editors to view the key will display garbled text, and saving any modifications will instantly invalidate the registration. Meanwhile, WinRK archives rely on obscure, discontinued compression algorithms (such as PWCM and ROLZ) that modern extraction tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR simply cannot decode. Users often attempt to convert these archives into standard ZIP files or extract text from the licenses, but standard online converters fail because the encoding is closed-source and entirely undocumented.
Conversion targets are extremely limited and context-dependent. For a WinRK archive, the only viable path is to extract the payload using the original legacy archiver, then repackage the contents as universally supported ZIP or 7Z formats. For REAPER license files, no conversion to TXT or PDF should ever be attempted. Because these are highly specialized, closed-source formats, direct translation is often impossible. However, just drag and drop your .RK file into convert.guru to identify the format, view its raw hex headers, and safely inspect any internal plain-text metadata without breaking the file. If our analysis detects a supported embedded format within a legacy archive, viewing or extraction may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted RKM, RK1, JPG, PDF, ZZ, DATA and WDL files.

The RK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RK converter.
