The .RK extension is most frequently associated with the Cockos REAPER digital audio workstation as a license key file, typically named reaper-license.rk. These files contain encrypted registration data that unlocks the full features of the software. Users often attempt to "open" this file directly, but it is designed to be imported via the REAPER interface rather than viewed in a text editor.
A secondary but technically significant use of the extension is for WinRK archives. WinRK was a high-performance compression tool developed by RK Software (later M Software) in the mid-2000s. It utilized proprietary algorithms like PWCM and ROLZ to achieve compression ratios superior to ZIP or RAR at the time, but at the cost of extreme memory usage and slow processing. Today, WinRK is considered a "zombie" format; modern multi-format archivers like 7-Zip or WinRAR generally do not support opening .rk files. Users with legacy .rk archives must often locate the original WinRK executable to extract their data, as no reliable third-party converters exist. A minority of files may also be compressed graphic assets from the Red King game engine.
