The .RGD file extension is primarily used for saved game data in the popular survival game Raft developed by Redbeet Interactive. These files store essential game states, including player inventory, coordinates, and raft architecture, using serialized NET data. A secondary but notable use for .RGD files is as a game data configuration file within the Essence Engine, developed by Relic Entertainment. This engine powers strategy games like Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.
Because .RGD is a proprietary format, it presents significant disadvantages outside of its native software. These files cannot be opened by standard text editors or web browsers. For Raft, the data is heavily serialized. For Relic games, the files use a specialized structure known as "Relic Chunky."
