About RBS files
The .RBS extension represents a distinct fork in file usage: it is most commonly an Encrypted Ruby Script used by SketchUp plugins, or a legacy ReBirth Song file from Propellerhead ReBirth RB-338.
For SketchUp users and developers, the .RBS format is a source of significant friction because it is a scrambled, unreadable version of a standard RB file. While this protects the author's intellectual property, it creates a "black box" scenario: you cannot open it in Visual Studio Code or Notepad++ to inspect the code, debug errors, or audit for security. Users often seek to convert these back to RB to recover lost source code, but this is technically difficult as the format is designed to be one-way. The modern equivalent is .RBE (Ruby Encryption), and SketchUp handles both, but neither is human-readable.
Alternatively, if the file is from the late 90s era, it is likely a ReBirth Song. These are not actual audio files like MP3 or WAV, but sequencer data for emulating Roland TR-808/TB-303 synthesizers. Because the software is discontinued and the format is proprietary, these files are impossible to play in standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player. To preserve these projects, they must be opened in a ReBirth emulator and exported (converted) immediately to WAV or MP3 for archiving and modern playback.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RBS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert RBS file to FBS, MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC or APE, you can use SketchUp or similar software from the "Encrypted Plugin Script" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to RBS, try SketchUp or another comparable tool in the "Encrypted Plugin Script" category.
The RBS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RBS converter.
