About RBS files

The .RBS file extension is most commonly an encrypted Ruby script plugin used by Trimble SketchUp to add custom tools and features to the 3D modeling software. Alternatively, it serves as a Ruby type signature file (introduced in the Ruby 3 standard) to define the structure and data types of Ruby programs, or as a CAD reinforcement steel schedule in Nemetschek Allplan. It can also represent terminal emulator macro scripts for Attachmate EXTRA!, InstallShield rollback files, or ABB RobotStudio scripts.

Users often need to convert or inspect .RBS files to view the underlying code, debug a plugin, or port an old extension to a newer format. However, SketchUp .RBS files are intentionally encrypted (scrambled) to protect the developer's intellectual property. This means you cannot simply open them in a standard text editor. They require the original software engine to interpret. If it is a standard Ruby type signature file, it is plain text, but standard online converters still often fail to process the extension correctly.

For unencrypted scripts or type signatures, the best target formats are TXT or RB for code review. If dealing with SketchUp plugins, developers usually repackage them into the modern RBZ archive format.

Because SketchUp .RBS files are closed, proprietary, and encrypted, standard online converters fail to process them. They cannot magically decrypt protected intellectual property. If our analysis detects a plain text Ruby type signature, a Microsoft Compound macro, or a supported embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RBS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RB, SKP, SKM, SKB and FBS files.

The RBS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RBS converter.
