An .r09 file is a split volume part of a larger compressed RAR archive. This sequence is part of an older naming convention used by WinRAR, where massive files were divided into smaller chunks (r00, r01, up to .r09 and beyond) to fit on legacy storage media like CDs or FAT32 drives.
Users often need to extract these files because the format is highly restrictive and outdated today. An isolated .r09 file is essentially useless on its own; it contains only a raw fragment of the compressed data. You cannot open it natively on Windows or macOS. You must rely on third-party software like WinRAR or 7-Zip, and you must have every single volume present in the exact same directory to reconstruct the original data.
