The .r01 extension primarily designates a split volume of a RAR Archive, a proprietary compression format developed by WinRAR. Unlike a standalone ZIP or 7Z file, an .r01 file is merely a fragment of a larger dataset - a legacy naming convention used before the modern .partN.rar standard. Users often have trouble here: you cannot open or convert an .r01 file in isolation. It relies on a specific sequence, requiring the initial header volume (often named rar or r00) and subsequent parts (r02, r03, etc.) to be present in the same directory for successful reassembly. Without the full set, extraction fails, and the data remains locked.
A significant minority of .r01 files are completely unrelated merchant payment reports generated by the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) or geometry run files for HEC-RAS river analysis software. While the RAR variety is best handled by extracting the contents to standard formats like PDF or MP4, the BPI and HEC-RAS variants are specialized data files that typically require their native proprietary software to view or interpret correctly. For archiving purposes, standardizing split archives into a single ZIP or TAR file is recommended to avoid losing individual parts.
