About PXD files
The .pxd file extension primarily identifies high-fidelity project files created by Pixelmator Pro, a popular image editing application exclusive to macOS. These files contain complex layer data, masks, non-destructive color adjustments, and vector shapes. The core challenge for users is the proprietary lock-in: because Pixelmator Pro is strictly for Apple devices, Windows and Linux users effectively hit a dead end when trying to open these files natively.
A strong secondary use case is the Pixlr Layered Image, generated by the cloud-based Pixlr editor. While excellent for quick online edits, keeping files in this format limits your workflow to the browser, often requiring conversion to standard desktop formats for archiving or offline use. Developers may also encounter .pxd files as Cython Definition Files, which function like C header files for the Python language.
Recommended Conversion Targets:
For Visual Compatibility: Convert Pixelmator/Pixlr PXD to PNG or JPG to make the image viewable on any device or web browser.
For Cross-Platform Editing: Convert to PSD (Adobe Photoshop) or TIFF to preserve layers and edit the file on Windows.
For Development: Convert Cython PXD files to TXT or C to view the code structure without an IDE.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PXD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PXD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PXD converter.
