About PXD files
A .PXD file is primarily a layered image project file. It is mainly created by either Pixelmator Pro for macOS or the Pixlr online photo editor. These files store raster image data, layers, masks, text, and effects. They allow designers to pause and resume editing complex graphics without losing distinct layer information. A smaller percentage of .PXD files act as Cython definition header files for Python development or PlanetPress XML documents.
The main disadvantage of the .PXD format is that it is proprietary and highly fragmented. Standard operating systems, web browsers, and default image viewers cannot open or preview it natively. You are locked into the specific application ecosystem that created the file. A Pixelmator .PXD file will not open in Pixlr, and vice versa, creating massive confusion for users. You cannot share this file with a client or colleague unless they also have the exact same software installed.
To share your work universally, you must convert the file. The best target formats are JPG or PNG for standard viewing across all devices. If you must retain editable layers for use in other professional design software, convert or export the file to PSD (Adobe Photoshop Document). Keep in mind that converting to JPG or PNG will flatten the image and permanently destroy all layer separation.
This file format is difficult to open or convert automatically because the internal structure is closed and varies drastically between applications. The Pixelmator variant uses a ZIP archive structure, while Pixlr uses zlib compression. Because the layer styling rules are unique to the rendering engines of these specific apps, standard online converters fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. We can inspect the file, determine whether it belongs to Pixelmator, Pixlr, or Cython, and extract internal content. If our analysis detects a supported embedded format or preview image, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PXD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PXD file to JPG, PSD, PDF, JS, TS, PY, JAVA, CPP, C, CS, PHP or RB, you can use Pixelmator Pro or similar software from the "Layered Image Project File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SH, PY, KT, PS1, SWIFT, LUA, PL, JAVA, SCALA, JS, VBS or TS files to PXD, try Pixelmator Pro or another comparable tool in the "Layered Image Project File" category.
The PXD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PXD converter.
