PXM files are the native proprietary project format for Pixelmator Pro and the classic Pixelmator image editor, designed exclusively for the macOS and iOS ecosystems. These files act as containers for complex, non-destructive editing workflows, storing raster graphics, vector shapes, editable text layers, color adjustments, and clipping masks similar to how PSD files function for Adobe Photoshop.
The main difficulty with PXM files is their rigid platform exclusivity. Because they rely heavily on Apple's Core Image and Metal frameworks, they are strictly incompatible with Windows, Linux, and Android environments. Sending a .PXM file to a client or collaborator who does not use a Mac rendering them unable to view the content without third-party conversion. Additionally, these are working project files, meaning they are often large, uncompressed, and cannot be displayed by web browsers or standard image viewers.
To bridge this compatibility gap, the choice of target format depends on your intent. To continue editing the file in industry-standard software like Adobe Photoshop, converting to PSD is the best option to preserve layers. For archiving high-fidelity flat images, TIFF is recommended. For general sharing, web publishing, or client review, converting to standard PNG (to keep transparency) or JPG (for smaller file sizes) ensures universal accessibility.
