Extract text from LabVIEW data logs (DTL)

The .DTL file extension is most commonly used for data acquisition log files generated by National Instruments LabVIEW. These files store raw measurements, sensor readings, and system state data collected during testing and automation processes. Alternatively, in Singapore, a .DTL file is a plain-text FTP payload containing CPF (Central Provident Fund) contribution details for employee payments. Less common uses include PTC Creo Drawing Setup files (stored as UTF-8), legacy Avid Deko video titling projects, and Liebherr crane system data logs.
The primary disadvantage of the LabVIEW .DTL format is its proprietary nature. It is heavily tied to the NI software ecosystem, making it difficult to share data with colleagues who use standard data analysis tools like Python, R, or Excel. Furthermore, these files can become massive and unwieldy, often requiring a paid license just to open and parse the data. CPF .DTL files, while text-based, use strict fixed-width or delimited formats that are hard for humans to read without proper formatting.
To perform statistical analysis or share results, users typically need to convert .DTL files to universally accessible formats like CSV, XLSX, or TXT. However, converting proprietary data logs is notoriously difficult because standard online converters cannot decode the proprietary binary structures used by NI or Liebherr. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
