About PRL files

The .prl extension is a notorious "chameleon" format used by distinct industries, creating significant friction for users trying to open one without context. Most commonly, it is a Motorsport Data Log generated by AIM Sportline devices, capturing telemetry from racing vehicles. These files are binary and proprietary, meaning they cannot be opened in Excel or text editors; they require the AIM Race Studio to visualize speed, RPM, and G-force data.

Another frequent use case is the Preferred Roaming List (PRL) database used by CDMA mobile carriers (like Verizon or Sprint legacy networks) to tell phones which towers to connect to. These are often SQLite databases or encrypted binaries that are locked to the carrier's hardware. You might also encounter .prl files as legacy compiled reports from Borland Paradox (now often managed by Corel) or navigation resources for Sygic and TomTom GPS systems.

The PRL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PRL converter.
