Extract text from roaming and telemetry files (PRL)
To convert PRL data files to another format, you need AIM Race Studio or other Database software.
To convert other file formats to the "Specialized Hardware Data File" file type, you need software like AIM Race Studio or a similar tool.
The .prl file extension is notoriously fragmented, serving entirely different functions depending on the industry. Most commonly, it acts as a Preferred Roaming List database for CDMA mobile networks, dictating which radio bands a phone should scan. Alternatively, it functions as a telemetry data logger file for AIM Sportline motorsport equipment, or as a compiled resource file for Sygic and TomTom GPS navigation systems. Older legacy systems also use it for Borland Paradox compiled reports or Philips proprietary DICOM medical images.
Because these files are generated by highly specialized hardware or closed enterprise systems, they are extremely proprietary and heavily restricted. A motorsport telemetry .prl requires the exact original software - like AIM Race Studio - to open it. Telecom .prl files require carrier-specific diagnostic tools. This is a massive disadvantage for users because standard text editors or generic converters will just show gibberish or refuse to open the file entirely. Furthermore, the format is often undocumented, meaning third-party support is virtually non-existent.
If you need to analyze the data, your best target formats are CSV, TXT, or SQL. However, standard online converters fail to process .prl files because they do not understand the underlying proprietary binary or database structures. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data safely. Our system will inspect the file's header to determine its actual origin. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as a hidden SQLite database used in some telecom files or plain text telemetry data - viewing or conversion to standard formats may still be possible.
