About AUT files

The .AUT file extension suffers from extreme fragmentation, making it notoriously difficult to manage. Most commonly, it acts as an offline license transfer file generated by Siemens Automation License Manager. However, it is also heavily utilized as a serialized finite automaton object for the Brics Automaton Java library, an XML forensics case file in Autopsy, or firmware updates for Autocom and Autel OBD2 scanners. Because .AUT files are used by completely unrelated software, users frequently encounter 'unknown file type' errors. Most are proprietary binary formats or specialized data structures. For example, opening a Siemens license file in a standard text editor will permanently corrupt the license key, costing thousands of dollars. Automotive firmware updates cannot be opened on a PC at all; they must be flashed directly to the scanner hardware. If you are dealing with a text-based variant like an Autopsy case file or an AutoIt script, you need to read the underlying data without triggering unexpected software behaviors.
