About PQZ files

The .PQZ file extension represents a collision between three distinct industries: legacy system backups, electrical engineering, and PCB design.

  1. Legacy Backups: Historically, .PQZ files were compressed drive images created by PowerQuest Drive Image (later acquired by Symantec). These are often segments of a larger PQI backup set. Users typically encounter friction here because the software is obsolete; restoring these requires a virtual machine running legacy Norton Ghost or Drive Image 7.
  2. PCB Design: In modern workflows, .PQZ files are component packages generated by Siemens PartQuest for the Xpedition and PADS design suites. These contain schematic symbols and footprints. Crucially, these are standard ZIP archives. Users often struggle to import them directly if the software version is mismatched, but the contents can be manually retrieved by renaming the file.
  3. Power Monitoring: For utility engineers, .PQZ contains power quality monitoring data from analyzers used by companies like Ergon Energy. These are proprietary binary files that lock data away from standard spreadsheet tools.

The PQZ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PQZ converter.
