About POLICY files
A .POLICY file typically contains security rules or configuration settings. The most common variants include Java security policy files used by the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to grant specific system permissions, Microsoft .NET assembly redirection policies written in XML, Windows AppLocker security rules, or HTML-based access policy notices for F5 BIG-IP networks. These files act as the gatekeepers for system operations, defining exactly what an application, script, or user is allowed to execute. However, working with .POLICY files is notoriously frustrating outside of their native environments. They are highly specific and structurally proprietary to the software that created them. A Java policy file cannot be automatically converted into a Windows Group Policy because the syntax and underlying security models are fundamentally incompatible. Furthermore, editing these files manually without deep technical knowledge often results in syntax errors that can crash applications or silently expose system vulnerabilities. Standard online converters frequently fail to process .POLICY files or strip out critical markup because they lack the context of the target environment. The most realistic solution for sharing or auditing these rulesets is to convert them to standard TXT, XML, or HTML formats. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible using convert.guru.
Convert.Guru analyzes your POLICY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert POLICY file to INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV, PROPERTIES or RC, you can use Java Platform or similar software from the "Security & Configuration Policy Ruleset" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to POLICY, try Java Platform or another comparable tool in the "Security & Configuration Policy Ruleset" category.
The POLICY Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our POLICY converter.
