About PNF files
A .PNF file is a Precompiled Setup Information file utilized by the Microsoft Windows Plug and Play (PnP) manager. When you install a new hardware device, Windows reads the plain-text INF driver file and compiles it into a .PNF file to load it faster during future reboots. Hardware manufacturers like Kyocera frequently package these files with their printer and device driver bundles.
The main disadvantage of the .PNF format is its compiled binary structure. Unlike standard INF files, .PNF files cannot be opened or read in standard text editors like Windows Notepad. They are strictly system-managed files, meaning manual editing or simple troubleshooting is essentially impossible. Users often encounter these files when trying to update drivers or clean up disk space, only to realize they cannot see what hardware the file actually controls.
Converting a .PNF file back into a functional INF file is practically impossible because the precompilation process permanently removes comments, variable names, and formatting. However, if you need to investigate the contents, you can extract the embedded text. For reverse engineering or troubleshooting, convert to TXT to extract readable strings, or view the raw binary structure in HEX.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PNF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PNF file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use Microsoft Windows or similar software from the "Precompiled Driver Setup Information" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to PNF, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "Precompiled Driver Setup Information" category.
The PNF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PNF converter.
