About RBF files
The .RBF file extension is highly fragmented and used by several completely different software environments. Most commonly, it acts as a Windows Installer Rollback File. Windows OS generates these files automatically during software setup to store backups of overwritten system files. If an installation crashes or is canceled, the system uses the .RBF archive to revert changes. Another widespread use is the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robot Brick File, which contains compiled, executable instructions generated by the LEGO Mindstorms software for the EV3 intelligent brick. Additionally, game developers like Relic Entertainment use .RBF files to store compiled game attribute data for titles like Dawn of War, and backup tools like Retrospect use it for data archives.
This extreme fragmentation is the primary disadvantage of the format. A .RBF file is completely opaque and lacks a universal standard. It is proprietary and cannot be opened by standard text editors or web browsers. If you find an isolated .RBF file on your hard drive, it is nearly impossible to identify its source application just by looking at it. Furthermore, compiled versions (like the LEGO EV3 files or Relic game data) are locked binaries; you cannot edit the code without access to the original source project.
Because of its fragmented nature, standard conversion is difficult. Windows rollback files and backup archives are not meant for conversion; they must be restored using their native applications. However, some software, like the Steam desktop client or the Vivaldi browser, uses the .RBF extension simply to hide cached media. In these instances, the file might actually be a standard PNG image or a PDF document. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.

The RBF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RBF converter.
