The .RBF extension is a classic example of a "filename collision," representing distinct binary formats that serve completely different purposes, often confusing users attempting to open them. Most frequently, this is a Windows Installer Rollback File, a system-generated script created by Microsoft Windows Installer to revert changes if a software installation fails. These files are typically hidden, proprietary binary blobs that cannot be "opened" or converted into documents; they exist solely for system redundancy and can often be safely deleted if found in temporary folders.

However, in creative and data environments, an .RBF file represents actionable content. It may be a compiled program file for the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 robot, a Retrospect Backup archive, or game data for titles like Dawn of War by Relic Entertainment.
